I Found This Little Gem Of A Laurel Floor Lamp On Craigslist Yesterday Morning. It Was Such A Bargain That I Really Wanted To Nab It That Morning But The Timing Was Off. Had To Wait Until Today. Status: Nabbed!
Aside from the shade...Ain't this a lovely vintage modern Laurel floor lamp? Alas, the shade came with it. Sorta Antiquey right? Not really our thing...but you don't throw the baby out with the bath water, do you?!
This is the part I was interested in! That fabulous brass base and just a little bit of sexy leg shown in
the form of walnut. Luckily, unlike many of the brass lamp bases I've run across, this one is in good
shape with no pitting or corrosion but still a few scratches here and there. It IS vintage.
This though, how did this mid century marvel end up with THIS shade? The seller was helping to
clear out an elderly neighbor's home who was moving in with their daughter. Apparently they had
already had an estate sale and almost everything was already gone. This, a few other lamps and a
sofa were about all that was left. Can you believe this didn't get sold at the estate sale? Probably
'cuz of that shade!
So I grabbed a few of my shades from my stash. Which one do you think looks best? The top one is
the original. The next one down is a contemporary shade that doesn't have the the bends in the cross
bracing to center it like the others. The next to last is a large vintage shade that has some really cool
texture. The last is a small shade that also has some neat texture but it's hard to see with the lamp on.

I like the shades in the order that you have them - 1) the darker shade 2) the textured shade 3) the small shade. That's great that you seem to have such a large selection to choose from.
ReplyDeleteAmazing the difference a shade makes! I vote for #1 the contemporary shade without the texture.
ReplyDeleteShade kind of depends on the rest of your decor. I like #2 best, but barely more than #1. #3 does absolutely nothing for me. Besides I own that original shade, purchased in the early 80s I think.
