Posting (somewhat) DAILY from the fair city of St. Louis Mo! Keep up by subscribing! See the madness evolve before your very eyes! (Click The Pic Above To Go To The Main Page!)
I'm not sure if there a just a number of new vendors or if the current crew are changing their tune, but the stock of what WE like to find seemed kinda thin at Treasure Aisle this visit. I'm hoping it's not a trend.
What luck! I had no idea I'd find a large sunburst just before heading home. I only bought the small one at the thrift store just so I wouldn't come home empty handed. And really, I only bought the big one because I bought the little one. Weird, that.
When I dropped by the Green Shag Market last Sunday I took a little stroll around the mall with Karen (the owner) and just before leaving she asked if she could show me this piece she had just picked up. Oh crap. Of course, and just after getting a fat check.
Even when I'm getting a decent deal I still find it hard to buy from an antique mall. Now, when I'm getting a steal I have no problem at all...but it wasn't easy to part with my hard earned cash to procure this quite impressive C. Jere Bird Sculpture.
See! Necessity IS the mother of invention! No more room on the floor of your booth? Go up! I'm way behind the curve on this though. So many of the other vendors have already done this...and done it well. Well, I'm playing catch up now.
Yup! Mr. Modtomic finally splurged on some nice brass and glass shelves to better display all the wonderful smalls (and apparently mediums!) that I've got down at The Shag.
I'm pretty well "stocked" right now and won't easily part with my cash when in this situation, so I just hunted with the camera (so to speak) today. If you're looking for some good retro stuff cheap, maybe you'll find something here. But alas, the saddest poodle in the world (no...I get it puppy, just look at that hair!) may be long gone as I actually spotted this before we left for TX.
1971? Wow, that's 42 years old! It's been Fall for 42 years and counting. The sellers who sold me that beautiful United Furniture bedroom set yesterday also sold me this. I asked about it as soon as I spotted it and they said, "yes, as a matter of fact we were just putting it on craigslist!". I'll take that too, thanks! Then I had to clean off 42 years of dust.
I've been steady bringing more and more items down to my booth space at The Green Shag Market but it seems like it just keeps disappearing! Good thing too, I've got lots to replace the disappearing bits with. Just today I dropped off this little lot plus some.
I still find it amazing that there are "antique" malls in Chicago that deal almost exclusively in vintage modern. I wonder if they curate their vendors in a way to ensure this great selection. In any event, the selection is absolutely amazing. But this serious Mass and Quality of selection comes at a price. Although I was able to pick up a couple nice bargains here, most of these vendors know Exactly what they have and have it priced accordingly!
I will be the first to admit - I MUCH prefer to dig through an old "iffy" looking joint like this as apposed to a sterile, scrubbed antique mall. There just seems to be so much more opportunity to find something amazing in a joint like this (Village Square Antiques in Pocahontas Il), right? Not really, this is just an antique mall...in an antique building! Still, there is something about the hope!
Nice pair, dontcha think?! We were barely into the first aisle in Revue - a Columbus OH antique mall and consignment shop - when we ran into this pair of Knoll Barcelona chairs. Oh how I loves me some Barcelona chairs! That got the camera out and it was well worth my time to do so. There was plenty there to photograph. If you live in or near Columbus OH you have a little of my envy! From the little we traveled through, we found it quite nice!
I took a little look around the web the other day for "Artisan House" just after picking this up and found that this piece is still in production and that Artisan House and "Curtis Jere" are still going strong!
These days you can pick up wall decor at just about any furniture store, most department stores and even discount places like Big Lots (love Big Lots!) but it's just something to fill the space between the walls or windows in most cases. I don't think any of it's likely to gain a following in the future in quite the way that the Curtis Jere pieces have.
Is this not the most "WOW" bathroom Ever? Sad to know there is NO WAY this one will be saved. It's both amazing (I'd totally keep it EXACTLY as is!) and seriously garish. It's like a page out of one of those late '60s early '70s Better Homes & Gardens decorating books come to life! I'm smitten.
OK, this might not be Vintage Modern but it could be! It's just reads that are cut and assembled in such a way that this amazing plant stand (I assume) is produced. It looks very much like a Harry Bertoia or Isamu Noguchi inspired piece but it's really just a really cool specific geometric shape...that happens to be kinda magical. Check it out, as well as a lot more cool stuff available at a couple local Antique Malls, inside!
There have been some REALLY good sales here in the St. Louis area lately for those of us into the vintage modern aesthetic! This one was listed on the net a few weeks ago with only a few pics of the Broyhill Brasilia collection that was to be available. Right away I shot a note to Illuminate to make plans to attend.
Thank GOD we have a spare bedroom...and laundry room...and some room in the garage...and under the bed, for all the Extra Barware! One of these days I'll go through all of it and decide what stays and what goes.
I passed through the front door, glanced up the stairs and this is what I spotted. Hmmm...could it be another signed Curtis Jere? I trotted up the stairs to find out. Guess what...
I spotted this fantastic Jere "Birds In Flight" sculptural piece in the pics for a local estate auction. Nearly nothing else at the auction seemed like it related to this piece or it's style and the auction was on a Thursday morning so I was hoping there wouldn't be many other bidders for it. Pphhhh...whatever.
