Yesterday Was A Heartbreaking Day At The Modtomic Ranch. Status: Sad.

DSCN8157

Sorry for the downer post. We had to put our little bundle of love down yesterday. I've put together a little "tribute" video of some cute pics I had of him.

We found out a few weeks ago that he had developed diabetes and we thought

we might be able to help him with some prescript. drugs and diet, but he got sooo

bad last week that we had to take him in for emergency care. They got him back

on his feet and gave us another good week with him. He had a very good last

week.

The song (I will follow you into the dark - By: Death Cab For Cutie) pretty much says it all.

I've never had a pet put to sleep and it was the hardest thing I've done in a very

long time. Full disclosure...Kennedy was actually the Girlfriends Kitty and I only

came along after they were together for about 3 years. But we were good buddies

for about 8 years. I think he thought I was his brother. I loved him like he was my

own. The girlfriend has been a little bit of a mess, she's been with him since he

was a little bitty guy. We were both with him when he passed and cried and cried.

  1. I'm so very sorry to hear about Kennedy. My heart goes out to you and your girlfriend, because I know how hard a decision that was. My daughter has two 13-year-old cats from the same litter that she's had since they were kittens that we bottle-fed, and she may have to put one of them to sleep soon. All of us will be devastated, as I'm sure you are now.

  4. My heart goes out to you guys. Your tribute was beautiful and it is evident that Kennedy was a very lucky kitty to have you two and you to have him. Here's to Kennedy.

  5. I am heart broken for both of you :( Any animal lover / pet owner knows that our little fur critter friends are part of our family. I will keep you all in my thoughts.

  6. My thoughts go out to you; I had to have my 18 year old cat put to sleep this year and it was the hardest thing I have ever had to do. It's heart breaking and I am so sorry for your loss.

  7. Thank you ALL so much for the kind words and thoughts. Like I said, I've never had pets myself and didn't really realize how hard this was going to be. I've known friends who lost their pets and didn't realize what they were going through when they did. I feel a little ashamed of myself for this. This really give one a some perspective.

  8. Mr Modtomic, I in no way wish to offend, but I found your website after blog surfing. The picture of your kitty, with the wooden one caught my eye. I happen to have that same wooden cat, without the green eyes. I tried to find an email addy for you, so as to keep this from offending anyone in thinking I am not sorry for your loss (which I am, I have three kitties myself, and have lost a few over the years). If, and when, you are ready or able to provide info about that wooden cat, I would be very interested to hear what you know about it.

I am very sorry you and yours have had to go through the loss of such a beloved friend.

  9. So sad for your loss. Words can never really describe the love one feels for their pet.

  10. Mr. Modtomic. I'm so sorry for your loss. I can relate. I had to make the gut wrenching decision to put down my beloved 14 year old cat Toad the Friday before Christmas this year. He had cancer and went downhill very fast. Like you, it was my first experience with making the decision to euthanize a pet and it was the hardest thing I've ever had to do. Any pet lover knows how hard it is and that it's like losing a member of your family. Hang in there.

  15. 50s Pam - Thank you Pam, it is true that we really love the Kennedy Kitters. I was even thinking about him today at work. I really miss him. He was a Maine coon mix and displayed the characteristics that Maine coons are loved so much for, that being a very loving and social demeanor. He was very much like a dog in that respect. He would run to meet me at the door when I came home from work. He would jump up on the bed when he expected you to get up, but snuggle up with you if you didn't. He loved to have his belly rubbed. He was our big luv bug.

  16. Just reading this. I am so sorry for your loss. I have four cats, two of which are Maine coons. I was going to ask if your precious Kennedy was one by his size alone. They are big cats that have the best of qualities of both cats and dogs. I'm crying here for your loss. I am so very sorry. Losing a pet in anyway is very hard, but making the choice to put one down is more than heartbreaking. My heart goes out to you and your girlfriend.

  17. Becky - Thanks so much. We just got his ashes back and I'm trying to find an appropriate container for them. I need to pick out a good picture of him too to frame up and display next to the ashes. We're missing the big guy.

  18. Oh Mr. M I bet you are missing him so much. I still miss my first calico and she's been gone since September '78. I named our daughter after her in '84. Katie.

  19. Yes, he had such a distinct personality. I miss all his little mannerisms. I saw a little cartoon the other day about a kitty trying to wake up his "provider" and it was sooo just how Kennedy would have done it!
