Wow, I've Been Off Work For Two Days And Have Mostly Struck Out At The Thrifts BOTH Days! So Here's Something Completely Different For Ya. Status: Drought.

DSCN1653

Two whole days of hunting and gathering...and for the most part, this one little rocks glass is all I have to show for it. I only picked it up because I thought I might find the rest at another thrift nearby. Hey, it happens a lot 'round here. It's weird. But anyway, there's rain on the horizon for St. Louis...hopefully it'll end my Thrifting Dry Spell as well! Until then, John (John who?) sent me a link to a very funny and super funky video on YouTube. It's so good that, even though there's copious cursing (WARNING - Lewd and Explicit Lyrics Inside!!!) I just had to share with ya. Don't watch if you are easily offended!

Great Stuff Up Front At The Green Shag Market. This Section Is Reserved For Consignment Sales And Is Where Some Of The Best Stuff Lands. Status: Available.

DSCN1599

I've taken the rest of the week off and with Monday being a holiday, it's like a mini-vacation...only I ain't going nowhere.  At least I don't have any plans to go anywhere.  So I'll be down at my booth space at the Green Shag Market bugging the owners and other vendors a lot!

Looking For Some Cheap Style? Chicago May Have Tons Of Mid-Century Dealers On Craigslist But There's Always Lots Of Private Sellers With Great Bargains Too. Status: Not My Turf.

image0

No, Mr. Modtomic isn't planning a roadtrip to the Second City but I got bored poking around the StL. c-list and decided to challenge myself to find some bargains up north. One of the items I found right away is this lounge chair.

Tuesday, August 28, 2012

Well, What ELSE Did Mr. Modtomic Sweep Up In His Local Traps This Weekend? You Probably Scoped Out The Big Items Yesterday, Today It's Smalls. Status: Stock For Booth 44!

DSCN1561

I've already got the tags made up! Well, some of 'em, anyway. I got stuff leaving the booth right and left. I need to keep replacement items ready and waiting to drop off on my way to work. It's good to keep things fresh and full in the booth. I'm glad that it's sorta on my way to work.

So What DID I Pick Up Saturday At The Local Thifts? I Just BARELY Got This Matched Set Of Retro Living Room Table Shot This Afternoon Before...Rain! It Is Finally Raining Again In The Mid West! Status: Moist.

DSCN1559

Rain we needed but it just came at the wrong time of day...at least for me! It was my own fault. I had all day to get out, clean these up and shoot some pictures. I was just too lazy to get out when it was dry. It's easy to get complacent when it hasn't rained in weeks and you feel like you have forever to get things done.

Picked Up A Little From The Local Thrifts But Left Some Good Stuff Behind As Well. Better Be Quick Though. Sometimes This Stuff Gets Snatched Up Quick! Status: The Iron Is Hot.

IMG_20120825_191149

While this 6 drawer dresser and mirror is quite nice it wasn't what drew me to this set at the Florissant Salvation Army. It's part of a multi piece set that, while a bit scarred up, is definitely priced right.

People Keep Trying To Clean Out My Booth! I Have To Keep Going Back With More! Status: Restock!

DSCN1545

I got a text from the fine folks at the Green Shag Market yesterday that the pair of Glass and Chrome Side / End Tables had found new digs.  Crap...I had lots of stuff displayed on those!  I really liked them in the booth too!  They were perfect for displaying there since they were glass and light passed through.  Oh well, I had to get something else in there.

Another Epic Super Score! Seems Like It's Happening More And More Often! Vintage Verner Panton From Rural Illinois. Status: Rare Morning Pickup.

DSCN1528

Another stupid amazing craigslist find. This time it wasn't StL. craigslist but Springfield Il. criagslist. Yet, it wasn't in Springfield but Jacksonville Il. At least Jacksonville is about 25 miles closer and although there isn't a major highway that leads there the two lane blacktop that does is nice and straight...due north!

Separating The Wheat From The Chaff. Sometimes You Gotta Take The Good With The Bad. Status: Mixed Bag.

DSCN1515

After a fun but lack-luster outing at the Belleville Flea last Saturday we jetted over to a new(ish) thrift just across the street. I've already fallen for the place and have purchased something there every time I've stopped...and left behind a great console stereo that I really should bring home. This time the big score for the weekend was a big box of Russel Wright Steubenville American Modern dinnerware in Coral.

Green Shag Market On Local TV! Status: Shameless Promo.

Unfortunately the spot didn't feature many of the vendors or really represent the offerings to be had but any (free) air time is good air time...right?

Picked Up A Couple Golden Clad Eames / Miller Beauties After Work Last Night. Another Late Night Craigslist Rendevous. Status: Bargain / Score!

DSCN1501

For about a week and a half it seems like there's been so little worth grabbing up ANYWHERE!  I got next to nothing at the Belleville Flea.  I did manage to procure a nice set of...something (I'll show ya later - promise!) at a thrift Saturday but otherwise there's been very little to be had that way.  And craigslist has been somewhat dry too.  But these popped up Monday afternoon...and they were cheap, cheap, cheap.

A Lil' Gathering Of Some Of The Smalls I've Hunted And Gathered Over The Last Week Or So. Status: Diminutive!

DSCN1489

All I found at the Belleville Flea was the little lamp and the Deco vase beside it.  For the life of me I really can't remember where I picked up the "Thorpe" fade cordial glasses.  Picked up the Brush planter Sunday from the Value Village after poking about my Booth at the Green Shag.

Had To Spend A Little Time In My Booth At The Green Shag Market Today...And Yesterday. Stuff Got Sold And There's Gonna Be A News Crew Shooting There Wednesday Morning! Status: Restocked...Again!

DSCN1466

...And since I was there and had some time on my hands I thought I'd shoot some pics of some of the other vendors wares. Things must going great for lots of the vendors because I see things disappearing regularly.

Didn't Bring Much Home But It Weren't For Lack Of Opportunity! Belleville Flea Market Weekend Tour. Status: Still Open Sunday!

DSCN1449

Dansk Kobenstyle...and lots of it!  It was priced a little out of my comfort zone but damn, ain't it sexy?  And who'd have guessed this would turn up at the Belleville Flea?  I love the crazy randomness of  what can be found here!

It's Been A Slow Week. I Got Nothin' Of My Own For You Today. So How About A "Hot Or Not?" Craigslist Special? Status: Judging Other Peoples Stuff!

image0

Let's take a few moments to troll around the St. Louis craigslist and peruse some choice items that weren't necessarily listed using the usual suspects of "retro, danish, mid century, eames era, ect."  Then you can tell me if you think these are worthy contenders for the hard earned green back of the Keeper or Flipper!

Last Year The Girlfriend Needed A Desk Lamp For Work. Done. This Year She Needs A Smaller Desk Lamp. Working On it. I Guess This Guy Is Headed For The Booth! Status: Brilliant!

DSCN1422

I'm not sure why she needs a smaller lamp than this but I don't make the rules...heck, I don't even enforce the rules...I just follow 'em.  So somehow this has already made it's way back home even though I have not yet supplied a replacement.  Hmmm...did she buy one herself?  Dunno.

Stop Drop And Roll. That's What The Last 45 Minutes Of Freedom Before Work Consists Of When I Have To Make A Stop At The Green Shag Market. Status: Resupplied.

DSCN1414

I try real hard to get up early enough to have plenty of time for messing with my Booth Space (44) before going on into work during the week, but it never works out so.  I'm always just finishing up, jumping into Frank and making a mad dash down the highway just in time to get to work five minutes late.

Number Five And Six! Two More Hard To Find Vintage Modern Fireplace Tool Sets. Status: Soon To Be Available!

DSCN1396

The vintage modern brutalist fireplace tool set I featured here a few days ago is now available at the Green Shag Market in Booth 44.  It was the fourth such set of tools like this to pass through our doors here.  Our first set has moved on to the Living Analog joint, we have a keeper set and now I have FOUR sets available!

Two Mod Ice Buckets. Found In Two Sizes. Found In Two Colors. Found In Two Different Places. Yet So Similar! Status: Headed To The Antique Mall. Want One?

DSCN1387

I picked up the red vinyl ice bucket on half a lark while out checking traps Saturday in St. Charles.  I though, "Well, it's eye catching and it'll drag some attention into the antique mall booth" and bought it with that in mind as I already have the coolest ice bucket I think I'll ever find.  Then, while out at the Wentzville Flea, I found it's little buddy - this yellow vinyl ice bucket!

For The Last Three Weekends We've Been Trying To Get An Opportunity To Sift Through The Wentzville Flea. Status: Finally!

DSCN1385

Two weeks ago it looked like it would be a perfect weekend to hit the Wentzville Flea Market.  I awoke to my alarm and a thunder shower pummeling the flea market.  Denied.  Last weekend, illness. Denied.  This weekend - we finally made it!  And found almost nothing, just a few smalls for the Booth Space (44 @ The Green Shag Market).  ::Sigh::

The Newest Additions To The Modtomic Crew. Meet Larry McDuff And The Flirt. Status: Ah, Youth.

DSCN1358

The Girlfriend has issues with things going stale. Not just bread, crackers or chips...the "scene" has to be kept fresh too! Enter Larry McDuff a few weeks back and The Flirt (as I have come to refer to it), the Girlfriends two new best friends.

More Of The Girlfriends Awesome Obsession. Not Just Salt And Pepper Shakers, But Salt And Pepper Sets! Status: Collected.

DSCN1344

These two sets of Salt and Pepper Shakers represent quite nicely the disparate styles that the Girlfriend collects.  It's impossible to put a pin in what exactly she will or will not buy but there are a few details that are considerable "no-no's".  No little animals.  No "places".  No "antique style's".  But really, otherwise it's pretty wide open...and distinct.  I know...weird.

Just A Quick Note To Mourn The Passing Of David Rakoff (1964 - 2012), The Smoothest Voice In Public Radio. His Wit, Humor And Tounge In Cheek Self Deprecating Manner Will Sorely Be Missed. Status: Loss.

image 0

I just heard on NPR this afternoon that David Rakoff - noted author and amazing writer / speaker - was lost to the cancer that he'd been at odds with for a large portion of his life. Read more here.

Didn't I Show You All These Lamps? Yeah, On Our Way Home We Stopped In Some Little Town In New York State And Found These At A Thrift Store! Status: Nice Pair.

DSCN1334

We took a little shortcut in New York between highway 90 and 87 both going to and from Lake George and on the "from" leg we managed to spend a little time in Ballston Spa. We found a nice (pricey) antique gallery AND a (cheap) little thrift store. Guess which got my hard earned cash.

It Looks Like The Weather Gods May Finally Be Done Crushing Our Souls So This Weekend May Be A Good One For Outdoor Dining! Status: OK...So Let's Go!

DSCN1326

Nice pretty design, ain't it?  We stopped at a Salv. Army thrift store somewhere along the shore of Lake Erie and these lovely little flowers (first spotted by the Girlfriend) grabbed my attention.  It was a small shop and the pickins was slim but these were really great and it would have been a sin to leave them behind!

I'm Back...I'm Back....Sorry...A Bout Of Food Poisoning Decided To Prove That Mr. Modtomic Is, In Fact, Only Human. Made My Body Feel Like The Rope Seat On This Danish Style Rocker. Status: Slightly Ravaged

DSCN1313

Yeah, Saturday morning found Mr. Modtomic worshiping the porcelain alter...and I've been recovering ever since. I've only been up and out of the house today...and that was only to get these photos and get a bite to eat. Mr. Modtomic's *ss was kicked indeed.

Neon Sign Lovin' In Upstate New York. Mr. Modtomic And The Girlfriend Didn't Get A Chance To Partake Of The Dandee Cream But I Shot The Heck Out Of That Neon! Status: Beautiful Glow.

DSCN0621

If you look at the RetroRoadmap.com website and click through to the New York state maps you'll see that this place - the Martha's Dandee Cream - is right next to a Six Flags amusement park and also very near the Glen Drive In theater. Oh...and there's that whole Lake George thing too. Nice place...you should check it out!

I Got Myself Together Early Enough Today To Drop Off A Handful Of Smalls At My Antique Mall Booth. Just Some Items I've Picked Up Here And There Lately. Status: Yeah, Cluttered.

DSCN1273

Putting together smalls for the booth space (44) has been inexplicably (and inexcusably) difficult for me.  How can this be when I've got so much....stuff!?   Just like those crotchety old codgers the fellas on American Pickers go up against from time to time...I've become attached.

A Mid-Summer's Evening Craigslist Score. August Welcomed Mr. Modtomic With Another Piece Of Paul McCobb For My Growing Collection. Status: Col (wait for it) lected.

DSCN1279

Today was a good day.  What a way to end a pretty brutal July.  Frank got a brand new windshield and Mr. Modtomic got a Paul McCobb secretary desk!  The windshield is flawless but the secretary...well, come on inside and I'll show ya.
