Lee Burr, Lee Reynolds, Lee Burr Reynolds, Vanguard...And The Ubiquitous "What's It Worth". Status: Open For Debate.

DSCN2922

This is my second run in with this very interesting wrinkle in the fabric of Vintage Modernism. A friend of ours had a "Vanguard" acrylic painting that they found in a closet of their home just after closing and moving in. It was not their style and thought I might like to have it.

Dang, I Almost Forgot About The Second Estate Sale On Saturday! Can't Believe This Was All Still There! Status: $20? Sold!

DSCN2905

Not too shabby a haul for one little sale!  Let's see...Five Dinner Plates (was a sixth but has a chip), a Platter and a Creamer all by Russel Wright / Stubenville for $20.  A cute little Porcelain Kitty Planter (?) for $1 (!).  A pair of Plastic "Skelgas" Advertising Salt and Pepper Shakers for $?? (dunno, they were for the Girlfriend).  And a Coctail Shaker with cut glass dots for $5.  Not...too...shabby.

The Milo Baughman Recliner Is Such A Simple And Beautiful Design. Mine Just Needs A Tiny Bit Of Work. Status: Part 1?

DSCN2857

When I first acquired this Baughman recliner I thought that a previous owner had stuck a piece of plywood under the cushion to replace the brocken canvas straps that had replaced the original spring suspension system. Not so. I found that what I felt was a piece of plywood upon sitting on the chair was actually the wooden cross brace of the base! Not good. Time to fix this.

Some More Booty From The Early Morning Saturday Estate Sale. Super Light Aluminum Lawn Chairs. Status: So Vintage.

DSCN2840

We already have a pair of great vintage lawn chairs that we pack up when heading to the Drive In or the park to catch an evening concert but these are just too...well...Cute! There's really no better word. Cute.

Estate Sale Weekend! Yeah! Getting Up Early On The Weekend! Boo! Status: Eh, Picked Up A Few Goodies.

DSCN2856

I've always wanted a cypress section table but just haven't run across the right (cheap) one yet. Actually my dreamy dream cypress table would have an aluminum tulip base and an amoebic semi fitted cut glass top! Until that day...

GAH! Whoa...That Is An Intense Smiley Face! Why Do These Make Me Think Of Jim Jones And That Kool Aid Fiasco? Status: Creepy? Hypnotic? Just Way Too Happy?

DSCN2827

I spotted a big ol' set of these at the Salv. Army thrift store up the street from me and I just couldn't stop looking at them. Those eyes seemed to be following me. Suddenly I found myself at the checkout with two fists full of McCoy mugs! GAH! How'd they do that?

It's Summer Time. Let's Go To The Movies! The Drive In Movies! Status: Join Me?

SSPX0777

Summer time is so the fun time.  The drive in opens in April and closes sometime in October I think.  We try to go as often as possible and luckily they get some pretty good movies!  We've seen Cars, Ratatouille, both Trasnformer movies, all the big summer blockbusters and lots of really bad movies there.  At $10 for two movies...well it just makes good economic sense...yeah, that and it's just so Retro!

Feeling Cordial This Evening. I'd Love To Invite Ya All Over For A Drink...But It's A Little Late And I'm Sure You Have To Get Up Early! Status: Ready To Entertain.

DSCN2818

These are some of the pieces I picked up over the weekend at one of our local thrift stores. They have a real Dorothy Thorpe vibe going for them. She seems to have had quite an influence on glassware of the '60s and '70s.

Broyhill Brasilia Dining Chair Suite. The Whole Set. Just Wanting For A Table. Status:Update - All Gone.

DSCN2770

This is what the Brasilia dining chairs look like with the original upholstery...after 50 years of use.  These need a little love and help but if you need a set to get your Brasilia set going, I got 'em!

Oh Snap! It was a fine day to be Mr. Modtomic. Took the day off work to have a 3 day weekend. Found these babies for $uper Cheap. Hit the drive in for a double feature of Green Lantern and X Men First Class.

The King Is Dead...Long Live The King!!! We Have Officially Replaced Frank Our Focus Wagon. It Was Just Time. Status: Purpose Served.

Frank Shark

"RUN FRANK, RUN!  That Shark is gonna git ya!"  It didn't get him.  This is perhaps the very first picture I have of Frank.  We bought Frank and Immediately took him on a roadtrip to Myrtle Beach SC.  I spotted this giant shark which serves as the entrance to one of those beach wear / beach towel / beach souvenir shops.  Well Of Course I had to get a picture of it trying to eat Frank, right?

Our First Virtual Vintage Voyeur Poke Around! And What A Smokin' Hot Pad. Try Not To Stare...It's Rude! Status: No, Just Kiddin'...Go Ahead And Stare.

opener

I FINALLY got the opportunity to have my way with Dan and Tiffany's most excellent crib this afternoon! Score! I had to drop by to pick up a set of dining chairs, right...so since I was there I thought I'd just barge my way in and start shooting pics and yelling at people to get out of MY SHOT!  I'm a PROFESSIONAL, ok?

Love Love Love These Brutalist / Cubist City Scape Prints. Straight Outa The Sixties Baby! Status: It Was Lopsided, Had To Fix It.

closeup

These aren't always so bright and cheerful, as a matter of fact...they're usually a little depressing. I guess that was kinda the point. I mean, cities from afar are easily romanticized but get in close and, well...not always so pretty. But my lil' print here IS pretty! So I guess the artist didn't get the memo.

Signs Signs Everywhere A Sign...Beautiful Amazing Vintage Neon Signs. It's Pretty Impressive How Many Still Survive! Status: Blockin' Up The Scenery? Not So Much.

Jun19280

So the neon might have gone by way of the Dodo but there's still an inherent beauty to the aged patina of this sign. Think about how many tired motorists who spotted this sign while driving and pulled in for a quick meal and a room for the night.

I Happened Across This Set Of Danish Salad Servers Just Days After Being Wowed By A Set Over On Secondhand Hanna's Blog. Status: Rescued

DSCN2709

Rescued is right. See how dry the wood looks in that pic above? This poor set had been through the dish washer a couple too many times. Dr. Modtomic prescribes love...and much need cleanup.

Did I Ever Tell Ya That Mr. Modtomic Is A Leg Man? A Mid Century Atomic Iron Hairpin Leg Man! Status: Just Another Project Out In The Garage.

DSCN2705

I bought this a few weeks after letting the Dorothy Schindele desk go, wishing all the while that I would have found it before. It would have been a perfect match and I would have loved to include it. It's too bad the new owner of the desk is so far from here or I would have tried to get it too them. But it's no problem...I got another desk it can go with!

Mr Modtomics Best Score Or Biggest Boo Boo? The Infamous FREE Pearsall Sofa And Letting It Go. Status: Sniff Sniff...Still Miss It.

Pearsall sofa 3

Free. That's right. We picked this up for FREE. The low low price of nothin'. Three easy payments of absolutely nada! I know...wow, right? Eh, it was a long time ago and the thrill is gone.

I Wish I Could Schedule My "Thrift Score" Postings Like Most Everybody Else. It's Just Too Hard With Daily Posting. Status: Thrift Share Anyday!

DSCN2691

We were out doin' a little light car shoppin' this afternoon but STILL managed to do tiny bit of thrift shopping. I got a cool cork pen (and postit note?) holder plus another cheap swung glass vase (that's 3 so it's an official collection!).

Lord I Wish I Could Bake...I Mean, More Than A Potato. Cake Would Be Great Right About Now! Status: This Pair Needs A Spare

DSCN2645

Trying to find these without dented lids is pretty tough. I've found a few others but none that have tickled my fancy the way these two have. I guess these were used pretty regularly by those who purchased them. Probably used to take cakes to church and whatnot.

Wednesday, June 8, 2011

Awwww....Look At The Little Cutie! Shhhh...Don't Wake It. Just Another Stray That Followed Me Home. Status: Sleepy

DSCN2631

I do have a thing for the carved danish looking kitties. I wish I could find some of those porcelain danish stylized cats that everyone else seems to have! I did spot a pair at the Belleville Flea Market a number of months ago but the dealer wanted a pretty penny for them. No sale. Sad. Speaking of sad, I've decided where to keep Kennedy's ashes.

One Of The Junk-tique Dealers @ Frisom. Status: Not For The Faint Of Heart...Or Germaphobes.

DSCN2603

Yikes. This place is for the Hard Core hunter gatherer. There are some good things in there buuuuutttt....this is what many might call "farm fresh". Ain't none of it been cleaned up. You pays your money and you takes your chances.

Ah, 'Twas A Splendid (If Short) Weekend For Art Lovers (This Guy)! Corraled Two Lovely Pieces Of About The Same Dimensions! Status: Ka-Bloom!

DSCN2626

Funny that about the only thing I found this weekend would be two tall portrait style pieces of mid century art. No chairs, no sofas, no dressers, dishes, lamps, tables...nothing! Just some old art.

Witco Thrift Score! Amazing Witco Tiki Art Snatched Up From The Thrift Store This Afternoon. Status: Uhm...Wow?!

DSCN2619

Had to work today so I didn't feel much like getting up early for the estate sales. Might have missed out as a local reader shot me an email with her awesome scores. Maybe she'll let me show them off here later next week. Anyway, I took my chances at a couple thrift stores and the Frisom Flea Market.

Looks Like I'm Taking A Page Out Of Bopfish's Play Book And Dishin' Up Some Dishware! Status: Great Big Ol' Copycat, I Guess.

DSCN2594

The Girlfriend likes the rustic hand made looking pottery and whatnot so it's natural that she'd love this Marcrest (Monmouth? Mohave?) dinnerware. We picked up this set that I would call a hot cocoa set a while back at a local thrift store and it's been in the Brasilia Buffet ever since we found that. The weird thing is...I remember having more cup saucers. Huh...

Friday, June 3, 2011

Pretty Huh! No...Not The Pinup. The Frame! How Often Do You Run Across A Trio Of Harlequin Shaped Picture Frames? Status: Dragged Back From Florida.

DSCN2592

I've been trying to find three great pics to display in these harlequin shaped walnut frames for a while now.  I thought about slipping in a couple of Pinups like what you see above but never got past the "trying it out" stage.  It's so hard to make a decision.  They are such great frames and there are so many cool things I could put into them.

Wh..Whoa...You Ok? Lil' Too Much To Drink There? Neah...Your Not Seeing Double! I Just Found A Mate For The "Robot Head" Toaster. Status: Not Cleaned Up.

Blurry

These toasters are so unique that I thought I'd never see another one. I found the second one at an estate sale last weekend where as the original came from an antique mall out near Columbia Mo.
