Decisions, Decisions, Decisions... JUST Before Leaving For Vacation I Scored This Plycraft (Labeled As Such) Eames Style Lounge And Ottoman. To Keep Or Not To Keep. Status: That Is The Question.
I've finally popped on an Eames Style Plycraft of my very own. We were supposed to already be gone and on the road Sunday when this was made available on craigslist. Good thing that neither the Girlfriend nor I had been very ambitious about getting out of town in a timely manner!
I've been after one of these in good shape for quite some time. The first time I even gave one of
these a second thought was at the Belleville Flea Market about 6 or 7 years ago. I didn't even
know who Charles and Ray Eames were! I just thought the chair looked comfortable and had
seen the style maybe on Frasier or something! There was a set at the flea market and as we were
leaving I sorta stopped and gave it a long look. The seller kept dropping the price - eventually
down to like $60 - and even offered to deliver it just to get rid of it!
I don't know why I didn't buy it, sometimes I'm just not in a buying mood...especially if I've been
buying like a fiend all weekend long. Alas, I didn't buy the set and after about a week I started
lightly kicking myself. After a month the kicking got harder. Now days people ask me in a hushed
and concerned tone about the bruises. Well, I didn't score this set for $60 bucks but I didn't pay
what seems to be the going rate (upwards of $500 around here) for it either. Somewhere between
the two.
Now I have a different "problem". I've got one too many lounge chairs with ottoman. I'm sure
the Girlfriend might say "ONE?!" But I've put some real energy into reupholstering the Plycraft
Mr. Chair...AND it's got the added cache of having the name George Mulhauser associated with
it. Even so, I'm thinking it's on the chopping block. I want a Genuine Eames / Herman Miller lounge
chair. This is a step closer to that. I'm gonna replace the Mr. Chair with this and see how thing
"feel" for a while. If after a while I'm as down with napping and TV watching in this as I have
been with Mulhauser, then I'm selling the Mr. Chair.
I like it AND it looks to be in super good condition. Any idea what year it is? I say keep it. change is good for the soul. I'm always changing... Have to. Don't wanna become another mid-century fanatic crushed by a wall of vintage stuff. I've come close though. LOL!
ReplyDeleteHi MCH. I Think it's a keeper. I've swapped it and have been using it for a few days now. It's not quite as comfy as the Mr. Chair but it's in better condition. It's a wash.
DeleteNo not Mr Chair! If this was black leather...then maybe a switch out. But I would keep Mr. for now and sell this one since it isn't really what you want. But that is my two cents. :)
ReplyDeleteHi Beccalina. The combo of light Birch and Camel has really got me. You don't see that combo too often. It really could use some more padding though. I may have to perform a boob job on it!
Delete$60 and you walked away?!?!?! Oh, well, there's no sense crying over spilt milk as they say. I'd be hard put to make up my mind on these, especially after the labor you put into the Mister and otto. Still change is good and you can hang onto both for awhile till you decide...
ReplyDeleteHi A Mod. I think a decision has been made. I'm gonna make the Mr. Chair available. It won't be cheap. That way I'll probably have plenty of time to change my mind!
DeletePersonally, I'd keep this one and give Mr. Chair the boot. This is one of the nicer replicas I've seen. Solid find!
ReplyDeleteHow's vacation going by the way?
Hi Nick. Either is just a place keeper until the real deal finds it's way into my greedy hands. Vacation was great. Much better weather than what you suckers were dealing with.
DeleteThis was my first MCM purchase back in the mid 70's when I was a teenager and wanted a really comfortable chair to relax in while listening to music on my headphones! I bought it new from a Danish modern furniture store in my area. I still have it today and it is still super comfortable and in great shape. Use it first before selling it, you may not want to part with it after reclining in it listening to music. Enjoy!!
ReplyDeleteHi AH. The only comfort issue is a distinct but minor lack of padding in the seat. Nothing Mr. Modtomic can't fix.
DeleteI'm glad you finally found one like this! I know you have been talking about this for years! LOL! Enjoy it!
ReplyDeleteHi RC. Oh, I'll still be yammering on about this topic! Even if I finally score a Genuine Herman Miller!
DeleteI know a certain person who wouldnt mind an orange lounge chair of you are reducing inventory
ReplyDeleteHi Johnny. Gonna be holding on to the Overman for now. I need that pop of color in the living room!
DeleteHold out for the real deal!!!
