Huh, When I Picked These Up At A Thrift Store In New Orleans Over The Holidays I Figured They Were Contemporary And That The Huki Lau In Metairie La. Might Still Be Around. Not So Much. It's Been Gone For Decades! Status Vintage Tiki Mugs!
While crashing with Mom-tomic in New Orleans the Girlfriend and I got a little tour of the surrounding area including a pretty nice, if somewhat pricey, thrift store. For realz, most of the prices made us all laugh out loud...but that 'cuz we come from the land of plenty - St. Louis. Still, this lot of Tiki mugs managed to find their way into both my basket...and my heart. Awe...
Do you buy / collect Tiki Mugs? Which do you prefer; buying a single or a set? See, I'm torn
between offering up a single and keeping four for myself or, well...the other way 'round. I've got a
great collection of Tiki mugs and related items but I don't have many sets of tiki mugs. Then again,
do I need sets of Tiki mugs? Dunno. Never gave it this much thought!
I looked up the Huki Lau Metairie La to see where it is located and the only thing I found out was
that it closed either in the late '70s or early '80s. Dang, I thought I might have found a cool Tiki
Lounge to hang out in while hanging out in New Orleans! You know...there just aren't enough Tiki
bars around any more. Something MUST be done!
The closest I've found in St. Louis (so far) to a Tiki Lounge is the bar at The King And I Thai
restaurant. They've got good Tiki style drinks served in authentic (?) Tiki mugs like these. It's a
nice bar but the decor is very contemporary and not Tiki at all. Still, on a nice spring evening or cool
summer night, it's nice to sit outside on their patio and sip an intoxicating beverage with your sweety!
I think it's better to sell them individually vs as a set. If someone wants to buy the set you can always accommodate that, but by doing them one at a time you can make many people happy! What a great find Mr. ModT - great way to start the new year!

DeleteActually I'm just on the fence as to whether I should keep just one or keep four. If I make the four available I would make each available individually, of course! They are pretty cool, huh. Maybe I'll keep the four.
Might be a business opportunity there. I'm quite often in the mood for a tiki drink but have to make them myself at home. Speaking of that, let's go grab a drink downtown once the weather warms up a bit.
ReplyDeleteHi Nick.
DeleteJust found a place down in The Grove called Tahaa Twisted Tiki Bar! We gotta check that joint out! Maybe Saturday night?
I'm down. Hit me up and we'll give it a test run.
