I spotted this chair and ottoman on craigslist last night around 8:30pm and called the seller right away. The phone just rang and rang. I looked at the pics again and figured, "huh, it must be at a thrift shop or something".
So I gave up. The set was listed for only $10...Or Best Offer! I was prepared to give
the seller a few extra bucks to acquire the set but I wasn't over the moon about it. At
most I was going to give the seller $40...maybe $60 for the set. But I wasn't able to
contact them. Then, about 10 minutes later I got a call back from the seller. This is
always a little awkward since they have no idea why I was calling (their phone never
went to a voice mail or answering machine) and I wasn't really sure who they were
since I didn't exactly memorize their phone number! But we got it all sorted pretty
quickly and I made arrangement to drop by and pick up the set after work. The set
was located the opposite direction from home and was going to ad an additional 40
miles of driving to get home. Not exactly a bonus. I got the address from the seller
and had my directions all mapped out when, just a few minutes before I was ready to
leave, I got a second call from them. Seems the seller decided that he didn't want to
part with the ottoman. He wanted to split the set! That was the last straw and quickly
I decided that this chair just wasn't for me. He had said earlier that there was another
potential buyer set to look at it the next day and at this point I just politely backed out
and asked him to go ahead and sell the chair to the next buyer if they liked it. Well,
looks like they didn't like the idea of just buying the chair either since the seller has
changed the ad. Now it's just for the chair and it's only $5! I might give him a call
tomorrow and ask him if the ottoman can be had with the chair for a few more bucks.
He did explain to me why he didn't want to sell the ottoman. It was just so he could
use it with a different chair...so maybe an extra $30or $40 might be able to pry it from beneath his feet.
Eh, maybe I'm better off leaving this behind like I did

I definetly now where your coming from, I keep seeing this green chair at one of the second hand shops for $30 and can't bring myself to pull the trigger. I wish someone would buy it. There is a pic in my last post I'd be curious to see what you think, or if you think it has mark up potential.

DeleteI actually kind of like the chair however the dirty hair spot is an instant deal breaker! No amount of upholstry cleaner will ever make that right again. Let it go!

DeleteThat's a piece I would have no regrets passing on. Without being reupholstered, it would never sell...and with new upholstery, it would never sell for what you'd sunk into it. The phrase "sow's ear" comes to mind...;)
ReplyDeleteHi Dana. Actually, I'm pretty sure that if I'd even paid $40 bucks I could have doubled my money on it with very little work. At $10...well, I'm no mathamagician...but I thinks I'd have done even better! You gotta remember that there are TONS of college students who look through craigslist for cheap retro too.
DeleteI've seen these chairs before. A while after one of our friend's aunt was moved to a nursing home due to illness, her family decided to hold an estate sale. A local shop owner who typically dealt with mid century era pieces managed the sale but was able to bring certain items into his store for early sale. A chair just like this one except with green upholstery in good condition was one of those items. He had it listed at $600 based on an assumption that it was a Pearsall. I don't believe that to be the case, but I could be wrong.
ReplyDeleteI'm not sure what it ended up selling for but I know it was considerably less than the $600 he was originally asking for. He decided to close his shop a few months back and shortly afterwards he started lowering prices and holding online auctions for the remaining items. If I remember correctly he started the bidding for this chair at $200. Here are a few photos from his Facebook page.

Your situation is a tough call, but probably for the best given the state of the upholstery. The super low price makes it hard to pass on (not sure I could resist) but the re-upholstery would probably push the chair beyond what you could get for reselling it.
