Looking For Some Cheap Style? Who Ain't? This One's For You Allie, CinciNasty Oh Hi! Status: Not My Turf!

Greetings from Cincinnati, Ohio - Large Letter Postcard

Another river city like St. Louis Mo, Cincinnati Oh. was screwed by Chicago and the railroad barons of the time and had it's growth stunted.  Still, like the StL, it continues to thrive and well...has a great craigslist vein just waiting to be mined!  Click through and let's dig in!

Picked Up Another Sweet Score On Sunday Evening. This Time It's A Franco Albini Rattan Foot Stool. Status: Keeper / Flipper?

DSCN2103

Ever notice, so many vintage modern furniture designers are also architects?  The first I ever heard of such a thing was Frank Lloyd Wright.  He seemed to have a penchant for designing furnishings explicitly for a particular home design.  Seems kind of rigid but I can respect the idealism.  Franco Albini ('05 - '77) was an architect as well, though perhaps not as well know.  This "Pouf" may be his most well known work.

Other Recent Long Weekend Thrifty Thrift Finds. So Many Great Smalls. Making Up For The Dry Spell Not Too Long Ago. Status: Raining / Pouring!

DSCN2092

The craziness here is all the Ice Buckets I've been finding lately!  I've got maybe 10 or even as much as a dozen now.  Some are more interesting than others and some are in better condition than others.  This one is a great style but has condition issues.  I'll be dropping it off at the Green Shag Market in my booth (44) soon as is but it could be done up nice with some polishing.

Alrighty. Here's Some Much Better Pics Of The 1940s Enamel Top Draw Leaf Table And A Couple Of Ladder Back Chairs I Paired Up With It! Status: Available!

DSCN2038

After picking up this table over in St. Charles I stopped at the thrifts closer to home and found a pair of nice vintage ladder back chairs that seemed like they'd match up nicely with it, so I got them as well.  Then I found a pair of pads that seemed made for the chairs!

I Know...I Said I'd Feature The Thrift Table From Yesterday's Thrift Haul, But It Seemed A Little Silly To Show That Two Days In A Row. So Here's Some Mod Candle Holders To "Hold" You Over! Status: Available!

DSCN2089

This trio of wall mount candle sconces were found at the same thrift but the matched set pair were found a week before the middle starburst single!  How weird is that?  At first I was a little irate that I could only find the single starburst but when I got home and remembered the matched pair and realized how great it would go with them, my OCD issue was solved.  I also found some cool cast iron pieces.  Click through to check 'em out!

Having A Booth In An Antique Mall Can Pull Your Thrift Purchases In All Sorts Of Directions. I Had To Come Back And Hem And Haw Over It For A Few Minutes, But It Made The Cut. Status: More Tomorrow.

IMG_20121025_174632

This isn't too far off my beaten path since we have a similar piece in our kitchen.  Ours is red with chrome legs and a red Cracked Ice Formica top but it's the same style.  These are great kitchen tables since they are easy to cleanup and are small when you need 'em to be and larger when necessary.

Monday Evening Found Mr. Modtomic Retrieving Yet Another Forlorn And Forgotten Broyhill Brasilia Piece. Ever Seen The Harvest Table? Me Either. Status: Ready For Refinish.

DSCN2037

While the Girlfriend and I were out having dinner at TGIF (we had to search to find one around here!) last Sunday, I (poking around C-list on my phone - as always) spotted an ad with a couple of crumby cell phone pics of this table.  Still, I knew what it was...and I'd never seen one in person before, so I had to get it!

Ya Know...Halloween Is Coming Up And A Great Place To Spend It - If You Can - Is New Orleans! I've Been A Number Of Times And Can Highly Recommend Hanging At Turtle Bay. Status: You'll See Plenty!

DSCN8779

New Orleans is always a bit....strange.  It's a city built on a swamp...below sea level...full of vampires.  But on and around Halloween?  Well, that's when it get's real.  If you you've ever fancied a visit during Marti Gras, you should consider trying out Halloween instead.  It won't be so crazy crowded....and it's easier to spot the vampires.

Sunday Was TRULY A Day Of Rest For Mr. Modtomic. Well, Mostly. I Just Can't Stop Myself From Checking The Traps! Status: Issues, I know.

DSCN2015

Yup, check that bad boy out. A JenYouWine rewards card for thrift shopping! So the question is...is that amazing...or just sad? Geez, I can't decide! Pshhh...what am I thinking, It's awesome. And I can't even remember what the Reward is!

Greetings from Minnesapolis, Minnesota, City of Lakes and Parks - Large Letter Postcard

So here we go yet again on another tour requested by a reader of a craigslist where in I cannot actually Purchase any of the cool items I stumble across. Torture, it is.

When Spending The Day Selling Vintage Modern In An Antique Mall Parking Lot, Mr. Modtomic Likes To Keep It...Luxurious. Real Leather And Chrome Steel From Italy Is The Only Way To Lounge. Status: Available...At The Green Shag Market Parking Lot Sale!

DSCN1981

Oh yes, my good friends.  The Mister and the Girlfriend will be keeping it real at the Green Shag Market Parking Lot Sale today...real COMFORTABLE that is!  These will be available at the sale but I don't care if they sell all day or not.  I'll just be happy to get to sink into their leathery loungey goodness for as long as I can!

Friday, October 19, 2012

Gaaaahhh!!! It's Friday! Anybody Up For A Drive To Vegas? Just Kidding. Ain't Nothin' Out There But Empty Houses These Days Anyway. Anybody Know To What I'm Referencing Anyway? Status: Gonzo...Bloggerism?

DSCN1969

I've gotten pretty accustom to keeping and supplying a booth at an antique mall but this is only the third time I've had the "pleasure" of preparing for a one day flea market style outdoor sale.  The photo above is of the inside of my brain right about now!

Geez, I Gotta Get This Stuff All Tagged And Packed For The Big Party Saturday. Party? I Meant Shag Lot Sale! But Other Than Getting Up At The Crack (Head) Of Dawn, It'll Be One Big Festival Of Vintage, Retro, Danish, Antique And All Good Old Stuff In General! Status: Stocked Up!.

DSCN1939

So, see anything ya like? Anything ya just gotta have? Except for the Texas Ware Confetti mixing bowl (the Girlfriends!) it's all up for grabs! I been busy as a lil' ol' bee making up tags and getting things boxed up for the Parking Lot Sale this Saturday.

C'mon Down Saturday To The Green Shag Market And Pick Yerself Up An Instant Southern Comfort Barware Collection! I Just Picked Up This Big Ol' Box Of SoCo Loveliness And I'll Be Packing It Down To The Big Parking Lot Sale Oct. 20th. Status: Arrive Early For Best Selection.

DSCN1927

After a wonderful craigslist snatching of fine Canonsburg dinnerware Saturday, I made the "rounds" in the St. Charles area.  I usually just hit the Salv. Army and the Goodwill but I decided to hit the St. Vincent while I was there...and BAM - a big box o barware score!

Still Out Scooping Up Smalls For Booth 44 AND The Green Shag Parking Lot Sale Coming Up This Weekend. Every Body Coming Down To Say Howdy? There Will Be Plenty Good Stuffs To Be Had! Status: Got 'Em Bagged, Getting 'Em Tagged.

DSCN1915

A bit scary that, don't ya think?  Kinda looks like one of those daft seemingly drug addled children's morning programming props...or characters even.  But no.  It's nothing like that at all!  In fact, your Nanna might just have one full of candy proudly displayed in her home just this minute.

This HUGE Set Of Canonsburg Temporama Dinnerware Popped Up On Craigslist Friday Afternoon. I Couldn't Resist. Status: Added To The Vast Collection.

DSCN1897

OK, so I talk a big game about searching craigslist without using keyword, but for real...I still do it. I DO, in fact, miss a thing or two by plowing headlong through reams and reams of ads to find those what lack the oh so useful keywords. Would have missed these had I not...and that would have been sad.

Looking For Some Cheap Style? Melissa Nominated Millwaukee Wisconsin For Our Latest Craigslist Query. Status: Not My Turf!

Greetings from Milwaukee, Wisconsin, The City That Made Beer Famous - Large Letter Postcard

It may be like pulling teeth (San Fransisco) but the results never cease to amaze me. With just an hour or so searching I'm able to come up with what I suspect are some very nice, overlooked gems in each of the metropolitan areas that I've been charged with scouring, and the Milwaukee Wisconsin craigslist has been no different. Craigslist is like thrifting from the comfort of your favorite easy chair! Don't have a favorite easy chair? I bet you could find one on craigslist!

Saturday, October 13, 2012

So I've Read On Various Similar Blogs About This Thrift Store Called "Savers". While Out Checking Traps Last Weekend In A Goodwill I Heard A Commercial Over The Store Radio For The Grand Opening Of Our OWN Savers. Status: Checked Out.

DSCN1884

Yep, we back woods St. Louisians now have a Savers thrift store to call our very own.  I was excited to hear that it would be open LATE too!  Until 9pm most nights I think.  So we made our way over to the new joint and took a looky 'round.

I've Suffered Through A Bit Of A Dry Spell With Finding Nice Artwork Until Lately. Here's A Couple Of The Keepers That Have Turned Up Recently. Status: Just For The Pretty

DSCN1875

I've found a number of nice prints and originals lately and of them I'm smitten with this black and white painting of what I've figured out is Piazza San Marco in Venice Italy.  I had a couple other pieces out and asked the Girlfriend whether they should stay or go and the pencil portrait by a June Kessler struck her fancy.

Mr. Modtomic Plucked A Plethora Of Prime Pickings This Previous Weekend. I'm Procuring Pounds Of Product, Predicting A Profuse Payoff When Pimped To My Peeps And Pried From My Paws. Status: Down With P.

DSCN1861

Whoa, that was hard...but fun!  Remember that song by the Rentals waaaaaay back in the'90s?  Friends of P!  Anyway, friends of Mr. M should come down to the Green Shag Market Parking Lot Sale on Saturday October 20th and take all my stuff home with them!

Just Kidding Jeff! It WAS The Falcon Chair! The Latest Addition To The Awesome Chair Collection. Status: Scary / Beautiful.

DSCN1855

You see, Jeff shot me an e-mail this morning after reading the teaser at the end of yesterday's posting: "picked up yet another amazing item..." I'm guessing he spotted the same ad that appeared just after midnight 'cuz the title of the e-mail was "Falcon Chair?" Am I that transparent?!  And so I sent him a reply saying, "What's a Falcon Chair?  Some sort of throne you sit in with your bird of prey?" just to mess with him and so as to not let the cat out of the bag...so to speak.

The Mersman Table We Checked Out Yesterday Sold Fast Enough To Make My Head Spin! This Lane Trio Is Taking It's Place At The Green Shag Market. Status: Ready To Move!

DSCN2100

Saturday found these three Lane side tables in the back of Frank.  They - much like the Mersman corner table yesterday - were kind of a mess.  Luckily it was sunny and nice out Sunday and I got right to work cleaning them up.  My original though was to save these for the Green Shag Parking Lot Sale on October 20th but I just couldn't wait.  They're in my booth at the Green Shag Market already!

Monday, October 8, 2012

I Just Got This Vintage Modern Corner Table By Mersman Last Weekend. It Needed Some Cleanup But I Found Some Time This Week Before Dropping It Off At My Booth At The Green Shag Market. Status: Already Found A New Home.

DSCN2094

This was so dusty and neglected when I found it last weekend.  I could see that it had the potential to be beautiful again and fill somebodies living room with vintage modern loveliness...so it had to come home with me.  I just couldn't leave it behind.  It's classic and understated design means it will easily fit with any number of other styles.

This Is It. The Final Chapter In The Epic BAM Chicago Trilogy. You've Seen The Smalls. You've Seen The Seating. Here's The Rest! Status: Back To Our Regular Programing Tomorrow.

DSCN1997

Even the outside of this place is really cool!  Check out that art deco marquee!  You've got your glass block window behind it and all that yellow glazed tile.  I wonder what this building was originally built for?  The stairs to the second floor are right inside the door, are beautiful and are meant to be seen - so I'm sure the upstairs was supposed to be frequented by customers, such as it is now.

Looking For Some Cheap Style? Tim - Presumably Of The Hoosier State - Requests A Sifting Of The Indianapolis Craigslist. Wanna See What We Can Find? Status: Not My Turf!

Greetings from Indianapolis, Indiana - Large Letter Postcard

There's plenty of easy to find vintage modern in Indy.  Just plug in your key words and start clicking!  These easy pickings are usually the pricier finds.  I try to keep from utilizing those here but sometimes even THOSE can be a bargain.  The only issue with those items is that they usually get snapped up pretty quick, but I'm gonna show a few anyway.  If they are already gone, my apologies.  If they aren't, you better not hem and haw over 'em, or they WILL be gone!

Friday, October 5, 2012

Ugh...Just Got Home From Work. Graveyard Shift. TGIF. Let's Check Out Some Of The Amazing Seating Available At BAM In Chicago. Status: Two Floors Of Goodness.

DSCN2039

It's got to cost these vendors a small fortune to keep such an uncluttered vignette such as this every month.  I guess the turnover must be real good or maybe it's just a hobby but I only see 10 items for sale in this space (which is only half what the vender is selling out of, but it's pretty much the same story in the other half!).  At least it looks REALLY Good!  I love steel frame furniture like this but it often looks a little kitschy or retro.  This set looks...well, expensive and well appointed!

I Know...You Were Expecting More Photos From BAM In Chicago, But The Girlfriend Picked Up This Amazing Ceramic And Walnut Lamp While I Was There. Status: And More!

DSCN2069

Actually the Girlfriend picked up not One but TWO great lamps while I was off gallivanting through Illinois.  This white ceramic and walnut is a keeper but the second one has already made it's way to my booth (44) at the Green Shag Market in the city.  The second lamp is a close match to one that I've already got in there so it was a natural to be offered as well.  Then, when I got back I managed to pick up a few cool items myself!

The Visit To Broadway Antique Market In Chicago Yielded So Many Pics That I Thought I'd Split The Lot Up Into A Couple Of Postings. Here's The Smalls. Status: So Much Good Stuff!

DSCN2022

I still find it amazing that there are "antique" malls in Chicago that deal almost exclusively in vintage modern.  I wonder if they curate their vendors in a way to ensure this great selection.  In any event, the selection is absolutely amazing.   But this serious Mass and Quality of selection comes at a price.  Although I was able to pick up a couple nice bargains here, most of these vendors know Exactly what they have and have it priced accordingly!

Tuesday, October 2, 2012

While In Chicago Saturday I Managed To Tour / Shop One Of My Favorite Destinations: The Broadway Antique Market. I Picked Up A Few Choice Items That I Thought Were Bargain Priced And Took A Ton Of Photos, But Today We'll Concentrate On Purchases. Status: Minor Disaster.

DSCN2060

The staff at BAM packaged everything up for me VERY carefully knowing that I had a long drive home to St. Louis...but that didn't stop mayhem from laying it's delicate touch upon my newly acquired dishware! No no, nothing was broke in transport. Only when I began unpacking these items for photography did disaster strike.

The Pod Planter (Malcom Lealand Hanging Totem) I Featured Yesterday Was Purchaded At A Very Nice Antique Mall In Normal Illinois Called The Bronze Giraffe, Which Was Kind Enough To Let Me Snap Some Photos While I Shopped. Status: Explored / Approved.

DSCN1967

On my way to Chicago Sunday I was hoping to stop and quickly run through a couple of the antique malls that litter the exits along the way. I realized right away that this plan had a fatal flaw. I got such an early start that NONE of them (I stopped at 5) were open yet! Not until I was half way to Chicago did I FINALLY find one that was ready to take my hard earned cash! Lucky for me it turned out to be a good one!
